Neen:

Summer ‘21

Summer 2021: I worked with the makeup company, Neen, to develop their app. This app is a cornerstone of their brand, offering customers not only a smooth shopping experience but also guided tutorials with the products they buy.

Additionally, Neen shoppers can subscribe to the beauty card, a once-a-month physical card in the mail including samples of the newest supplies. On the card are four QR codes, linking to a tutorial by four different models, each representing a different skin tone, using those products. The tutorial launches in the app for an easy follow-along experience.

My role: Neen hired me to develop this app, as the only app developer. I worked alongside the founder, Jeanine, to design the app interface in Figma. I developed the app in React Native. After implementing the features, I worked with a team in Poland to develop a backend and get the app ready for release. A graphic designer was hired afterwards to create the final theme including colors, font, and icons.

Tech specs: The main feature of this app is the follow-along tutorial screen, which splits the view between the camera and the video. We designed this tutorial to be practical--the user can see both the tutorial on the top and their own face on the bottom as if they were at the mirror. There is also voice commands users can say to pause, play, go back, etc on the video without using their hands. At any point, the user can take pictures or videos of themselves. I incorporated a facial recognition API to find the eyes, mouth and cheeks of the user’s face in their photos, to put markers that link to the products in the shop tab.

Screenshots from the tutorial in the app. Face is obscured due to unflattering angles.
