As a violinist, intonation is key to my practice. Moreover, intonation is more than just matching the tuner or matching the piano. Sometimes, you need a note just a fraction of a hair below what is considered “perfect”. My violin teacher asked me and another student if we could develop an app that allowed violinists to tune to extremely precise frequencies. The goal is to create a bass line of precise notes that a user can then play along to. We set out to develop an intuitive UI to simplify a seemingly complex process. Here’s what we came up with:

What next?

My partner and I are looking to iterate on this initial idea by adding a violin sound model rather than the sine wave you currently here. The app currently works on desktop and tablet, so we are hoping to publish it on the app store soon!

Here’s a look at our current demo (be aware that sine waves are not very pleasant to hear, start with volume low, especially if using headphones).
